Melling, 7 miles from Liverpool city centre, once had its own racecourse in the early 18th century. The course, complete with grandstand, was on the Liverpool to Ormskirk road but no evidence remains. However, Melling is still mentioned twice during National week; the first occasion when the Melling Chase is contested, and the second time as Grand National horses encounter the Melling road, a public road which crosses Aintree racecourse. The Grade 1 Melling Chase for 5 year olds and over, was first run in 1991 over 2 ½ miles and 16 fences when won by Blazing Walker trained by Arthur Stephenson.
